Philosophy

The practice of yoga, while deeply spiritual, is not affiliated with any one religion. People of many different faiths practice it around the world. It is a tool for wellness, and can be used to enhance any spiritual practice. The word Yoga means to yoke, or join, the body mind and spirit.

My practice is an eclectic blend of Ashtanga, Vinyasa flow, Anusara,  Yin, and restorative yoga, where the breath always rules. I often hear comments from people who have never practiced yoga that they are not in shape, or flexible enough. My reply is that if you can breathe, you can practice yoga. It really is for every body type, and all who embrace it will benefit in ways they never imagined.

I encourage my students to challenge themselves, but accept where they are in their practice. Yoga is not about strength or flexibility, or the ability to do difficult postures. It’s about being fully present, and aware of how you’re responding to the sensations that arise. While you are certain to become stronger, and more flexible, this is just one benefit. Yoga teaches us to be mindful, and awake. So when we step off our mats, and into our life, we are able to live with more meaning and depth, fully enjoying each moment.

The philosophy at Neighborhood Yoga is, come as you are. Leave feeling restored and renewed. If my students leave their mats filled with possibility and hope, love and intention, then I have done my job.
